Copy Editing

What is a copy edit?

A copy edit is all about creating clarity, consistency, and correctness.

Errors in books can distract readers and take away from their enjoyment of the story. Even something as simple as a poorly placed comma can cause a lot of confusion. My in-manuscript copy edits will remedy such errors.

Using a style sheet, I will also track your specific language and punctuation choices to ensure that they are used consistently throughout your whole manuscript. This creates a final document that is both polished and cohesive.

My copy edit may address:

  • language usage

  • grammar

  • spelling

  • punctuation

  • anything confusing or ambiguous

  • continuity of story details

  • conscious language and representation

  • light fact checking

  • permissions or copyright concerns

Who needs one?

This service is best for an independent author who is getting ready to self-publish their novel and wants a professional edit.

I especially recommend this service to science-fiction and fantasy authors. You’ve probably put a lot of effort into world building, and a copy edit will help ensure that all of your careful details appear exactly as you want them to.

What will you receive?

You can choose to receive either:

  • a document with edits performed with Microsoft Word Track Changes so you can clearly see where changes have been made

OR

  • a document with edits formatted as comments in the margins (with the exception of simple corrections)

PLUS

  • a personalized style sheet outlining all of your important style choices

  • an editorial report that celebrates your manuscript and explains my rationale for the edits

  • complimentary after-editing support in the form of question-and-answer emails
